The Homewood City Council last week approved paying $140,000 to eight nonprofit agencies and organizations that provide services to city residents. The money is part of the city's 2001-02 budget, but the council had to approve the contracts before making payments. Councilman Allan Trippe said the city isn't making donations to the organizations. "These are all fee-for-service contracts," he said. The contracts expire with the fiscal year on Sept. 30. They are: The Exceptional Foundation $75,000 for recreational and social activities for people with physical and mental disabilities that inhibit participation in mainstream activities. Birmingham Museum of Art $15,000 to conduct art tours and education programs for Homewood students, teachers and residents. Alabama Symphonic Association $15,000 for music appreciation programs for students. Birmingham Music Club $10,000 to perform in-school concerts for Homewood students. Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council $10,000 to provide counseling for Homewood residents, primarily those who are unemployed or who do not have insurance coverage. Jefferson-Blount-St. Clair Mental Health/Mental Retardation Authority $6,000 for psychological services for Homewood residents without insurance coverage. The Assistance League of Birmingham $5,000 to provide school clothing and hygiene items to elementary and middle school students. Children's Dance Foundation $4,000 for a dance outreach program for Homewood residents. Click The X in top/right browser to close this window and return to The Homewood USA homepage |
